I was working as a Product Manager for an advertising firm when I found myself caught up in the recession of the early 1990’s. I was doing well but not as well as I thought that I could do. I was working long hours, and the pay wasn’t great. I was basically living paycheck to paycheck. When the company I worked for announced layoffs, it created an opportunity for me to consider other types of work. Although I did start investigating other career options, I wasn’t sure exactly how to pursue them. I didn’t really have a plan on how to make a change, and the pressures of paying bills resulted in my taking a similar position at different company. After becoming similarly disillusioned, I decided it was time to make a change. However, I needed to have a strategy to give me the direction and confidence to make a change. That led me to Dr. John Rom and Strength Realization.
Working through the Strength Realization program enabled me to see the roles I was playing in key projects, the skills I used, and what values and needs were most important to me. When brought together, this information provided me with a clear understanding of what type of work most energized me, which pointed to a career in data management and analytics. Most importantly, Strength Realization helped me understand that so much career advice out there merely deals with the mechanics of finding a job but doesn’t help you seek out a long-term relationship with an employer – and THAT is what I really wanted. Strength Realization helped me make sure the company and position I was looking at checked the boxes I wanted checked, not just what they were looking for in a candidate. This ensured that the role I was taking would be a good fit for my strengths and skills.
Since starting Strength Realization, I’ve been able to grow my career in data and analytics by taking on new roles and challenges. Today, I’m working as a successful Data Architect for a Fortune 100 company. I could never have made the shift from advertising to technology without Strength Realization. The insights from the process empowered me to be in control of my career, and I am so much more satisfied with my work life as a result.
